we ate what was put in front of us and we jolly glad to get it. I wonder sometimes if it might not be a bad idea to have a rationing system for food as I'm sure the millions of tons of food that gets dumped every year would not happen quite so much if food was a little less available .Obesity might be reduced a bit as well if half the 'junk' food dissappeared as well.
I wouldn't want to return to the severe austerity of my childhood but we could all do with eating a little lees and using up the stuff we have a little more .Mind you with food prices going the way they are, I think most people are cutting back quite a bit anyway.I don't want folk to live on bread and marge but perhaps teaching our children and grandchildren that to waste food is as bad as wasting fuel and water resourses.0 -
Some great answers and sensible advice, thanks folks. Well... I'm still here after consuming the first pack, no strange smells in fact I was starving by the time I checked for replies so the smell was driving me and doggie wild.
I'm always a bit cautious of bacon after buying it in a sealed plastic tray several times and finding it had gone off before its use by date so I always buy it vacuum packed now. That horrid whiff when you open a pack of minced beef in a plastic tray that's 'matured' makes my heart sink too, as does finding out of date cooked meat which probably harbours more dangers than eating out of date bacon.
I hate wasting food so am reluctant to throw it away, the dog's normally grateful though.:)0 -

Exactly Jackie,
We used commonsense. Hard to believe we went years without a fridge and it took many years to get a freezer of some kind(we had the fridge with a little compartment at the top. And in retrospect probably broke a few rules.
I know I eat less, smaller portions and stretch what I have. I throw very little away too. And yes, sail cose to thhe wind regarding dates on quite a few items."A government afraid of its citizens is a Democracy. Citizens afraid of government is tyranny!" ~Thomas Jefferson
