To eat, or not to eat...

  • I dare say over the years I have eaten all sorts of stuff thats been 'out of date' but I'm still here.basically when I was a child my mums motto was if it doesn't go in the kids then the dog gets lucky There was no such thing as dates or BBF it was a case of sniff it and if it smelt ok then it probably was .When living on rations as I did until i was 12 you didn't look too closely at what was on the plate just ate it up and was glad to do so. I don't think my old Mum would have poisoned us on purpose so its definitely a case of sniff it and decide. The only thing I would be wary of funnily enough is cream as I once was violently ill after having some cream in an hotel that was just a bit 'off'

I would agree, dairy items I am more likely to be cautious of.

You know straight away if bacon is off, not only by the smell, but it gets a slimy texture to it too and gives off some awful liquid, if it is anything like that chuck it away, I also freeze mine when I buy it and it is fine once defrosted, so I never go by the dates as it could have been in the freezer long after the date has gone.
:) Been here for a long time and don't often post
  • I'd use what I can and freeze the rest in chunks or something for pizza toppings/carbronara/ chuck in a stew /quiche etc but o ly if they smell ok and your happy to do so.

bacon is a cured meat, it was eaten all through winter before fridges and use by dates were invented.

if it smells ok it will be fine. if its off you would know abut it when you smelled it and looked at it.

i would eat it no problem

I'd eat it, but it would probably be served somewhat crispier than I usually cook it, just to be sure...
  • If it smells ok I'd eat it :O)
  • Open the pack up and cook a slice.

If it smells ok then eat it.

Portion up the rest and freeze it.

If you don't have a freezer - cook it and store in the fridge.

I'm pretty paranoid when it comes to meat, which annoys the Mrs no end as she is quite flexible with dated food. Even if the use by date is the next day or two, I wont touch it.

There are frozen sausages in my freezer I know I will never touch because they have been in there for 3 months, common sense does tell me that frozen food is safe, but my paranoia screams "NOOOO!!!". The Mrs will happily eat them up, as well as the bacon in the fridge that borderlines its use by date, so there is not so much wastage.

Mrs would say its safe to eat if it smells ok, so it should be ok OP. I personally would not go near enough to take the sniff test, it would go straight in the bin. ;)

I have to extra careful on health grounds but equally my budget is tight so I dislike throwing items out, it does happen but I try to not be too paranoid on the dates, what did we do before they started dating everything?
