When is considered off-peak for Oyster + Railcard travel?
Options
It is possible to get 1/3 discount from off-peak Tube travel in London with a Railcard.
I have a 16–25 Raicard, but was charged for journeys at 18:00, while off-peak is defined by TfL as:
Peak
Why am I being charged? It says on the TfL website (Railcard tab) that I will get a 1/3 discount for off-peak single trips and the daily price cap.

I followed you link and clicked on Oyster off peak and it says Mon-Fri 09:30-16:00 and after 19:00.
The 04:30 but you put is a red herring because it only applies to a weekend ticket.
I know from travelling into London on a one day travel card that if I am travelling in late (10am) they always ask if I want a peak or off-peak, off-peak does not allow me to travel between 16:00 and 19:00(ish).IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

Hey
Where did you see that?
The site is very misleading, as you said, it's a total red herring as this information isn't stated anywhere clearly0 -
http://www.tfl.gov.uk/tickets/14416.aspx - hover over the Oyster PAYG column heading for a definition of off peak.
The definition differs for PAYG and railcards0 -

Ah true, but on that other page it doesn't mention that and says the contrary — according to how I've been charged, you're right.
But is this mis-advertising? One pays the price that is shown, no?0 -
The confusing bit about weekdays between 1600 and 1900 is that journeys are charged at the peak rate (with some exceptions) where 16-25 Railcard discount does not apply, however the charges count towards your off-peak cap (if no journeys are made prior to 0930) for which the Railcard discount does apply. Therefore you were charged correctly for a single journey. If you have already reached your off-peak cap for the day then this journey should not result in extra charges.0

But I travelled on a weekday at 18:00:
"Off-peak
Monday-Friday from 09:30-04:29 (the following day)"0 -
You made 1 journey yes? If thats the case then go to this link that you provided in your first post and hover over where it says 'Peak Single' at the top of the fares column. This will bring up the peak times. You can see that single journies have the restriction.
Unfortunatly this first link that you used in your very first line is about daily 'Price capping' if you are using your Oyster for more then one journey , in effect using it as a travelcard and as such does not have the same restrictions as a single journey using an Oyster would have.
I think you got mixed up a little looking at the pages and thinking one meant something else. But they correctly charged you for the single journey 'peak time' price for which your railcard was not eligible."If you no longer go for a gap, you are no longer a racing driver" - Ayrton Senna0 -
Ah, I see, thanks. Now I see.
I gotta say, even though I was confused, hovering over is a very interesting place to hide this stuff — what if I'd have JS disabled, or be on a mobile device?
That info should also be clearly written somewhere
But good news is that they won't charge me over daily limit if I travel at 18:00, right? For the daily cap, the off-peak is what I stated, only before 9, correct?0 -
Not quite, but almost! It's explained more clearly at https://www.oyster-rail.org.uk which is an unofficial site. Take a read of that and if there's anything you are unsure of, ask the author either by posting on his site or use a dedicated Rail Fares, Tickets & Routeing forum to ask experts.0

Thanks Yorkie,
I guess it takes an unofficial site to explain something properly.
I wonder if it's worth reporting this to TfL or trading standards?0
