Avoid buying the door mat, Do you have a section of carpet left over, lying in the attic maybe, cut a square from it and use as a mat.

No its a rented house....with cream coloured carpets!

I've always written down everything I want in a notebook. Then I look through the list now and again and cross off any items I have changed my mind about. If I still want an item I can then think about saving up for it or finding out where I can get it cheaper etc.

Carpet shops sometimes throw out old carpet books, I'm not sure if that would be a big enough door mat but for free it might suffice, and you could mix and match colours!
Q10 is available in aldi too, or it was, I just can't think of the name.

I really like the idea OP, I only tend to buy things when I need to but I don't shop around much, the coat I bought last year needs replacing already and I desperately need some winter clothes
  • ohh thought I'd reply to this. when my friend needs something like a new coat she sells old stuff on ebay, when shes made enough in paypal she uses that to buy the new item. Just a thought?
Also, the face cream in Lidl is very good and has great reviews, it used to cost £1, not sure how much now? Also lots of things like this on ebay that people have used once and dont like, same for make-up and perfume :)

Well it's not been 30 days yet but from my list of

    Winter boots
    Coat hangers
    Door mat
    Q10 cream

I only actually need winter boots.

I've tidied my wardrobe and have masses of spare hangers. I have a cut off piece of carpet from a friend for the winter mess my feet will bring in the house so no door mat needed. And I got a cheaper Q10 from aldi for £3.....

.... So saved £16 of non essential buying :T

Rather than Q10 you could buy Aqueous cream - just bought a kilo pot (it's huge!) from Savers for £1.99. Will probably last years. Last one I bought was about 3 or 4 years ago and that was less than half the size and cost me 99p. Last of the big spenders, me:rotfl:.

Well I read on the forum somewhere about making a 30 day list. This is a list to help you stop spending. I took up the challenge and it worked so I thought I'd share it again.

Basically if you want to buy something, add it to the list with the date. In 30 days time you look at the list and if you still want it, buy it. This stops impulse shopping. I did it thinking 'I'll still want them in 30 days' but here's my results...

    My list

    23rd Aug. book called 'ishi's brain' £15
23rd Aug. corner stand for the bath £10
    23rd Aug. winter coat £30-40

So the book sounds like a good read but I have too many books as it is.... So that's crossed off.

I don't actually need a stand in the corner of my bath as my shampoo and conditioners sits in the corner just fine on their own.... So that's crossed off.

I actually do need a winter coat as sorted out my winter clothes and haven't got a warm one.

    Saved £25 of spending I can't afford!

    My new list

    23rd Sept. Winter boots
    23rd Sept. coat hangers
    23rd Sept. door mat
    23rd Sept. Q10 cream

Fab idea! Is it ok if I post my list here? Will review on 1st November

  • Brilliant idea. I'll start one myself me thinks.

On the book front, if your library hasn't got it in stock you can ask them to order a copy and you will be charged a couple of quid maximum. When it comes in, you are the first one to read it so you still get the 'new book feeling' thing. Just take it back within the loan period or remember to renew it so you don't get charged. Not sure if all libraries run like this but ours does. Its worth a shot.
