Home Insurance - New Kitchen Extension

Hi,

We have just recently had a new kitchen extension which was completed 2/3 months ago. My question is if anything were to go wrong ie: leaking roof - would my household insurance cover this? Would I have to write to my insurance company telling them that I have had a new extension built?

Many thanks,

I'm surprised you haven't told your insurers as this is a material change to the policy. Your house is now effectively underinsured. For example if the rebuilding costs prior to the extension was £100000, but you have now (post extension ) got a rebuilding cost of, say, £115000 and there was a total loss, you would be underinsured. Therefore you need to advise your insurers.

However if you have unlimited rebuilding costs as som insurers offer, then you are ok. However, you still need to advise them.

It's best to let the Insurers know.

If your Building Insurance is based on a sum insured, you will need to increase it by the cost of the extension and kitchen and add about 50% to this figure to factor in a safety margin.

If your Building Insurance is based upon a notional sum insured eg £500k or £1m or Unlimited you should not need to increase your sum insured.

Don't forget to increase your contents sum insured as well (Again use the above basis) as I assume you've added to your contents with new things etc
