Paint on walls not what the tin says!

Hi there

Can anyone help me to understand why the pale grey on the front of my tin of paint is baby blue on the walls!

I'm not a novice painter but no expert. I sugar soaped the walls, I cleaned then with clean water. I let them dry fully. I stirred the paint fully. I am using like for like paint (kitchens and bathrooms) just a different colour and I've not seen this before! Colour before was grey and this the nearest I could see to match.

I've just out the one coat on but don't want to waste my time if this is a dodgy batch of paint! I've let it dry for 4 hours and it looks lighter but still no where near what I was expecting!

Any tips from any one more clued up than me grateful!

Many thanks

What paint is it?B&Q colours always end up a different colour.

Did you use a tester beforehand?Could it be the lighting bringing out a blue hint?

  • We've just had the same problem with Dulux Polished Pebble - looks grey on the tin (and the sample in B&Q) but looks like Cornflower white on the wall - much more blue than grey.

the colour you see on colour charts or on the front of the tin is only a rough guide as to the colour that will dry on the walls.
also the way light reflects of the walls will make a difference to the shade of the paint , some walls will look totally different to others

Does it match the tester? I've almost never found the tin to match the actual wall in the house but testers match the big tins well.

All the colours are guides whether they be colour charts or the out side off the tin.
You are painting on to a wall they have put the colour guide on paper.
Depending how the light hits your walls you will see it differently, depending on whether you use a roller or brush can alter the way the light hits the paint, if you are ever in doubt buy a test pot first and see if you like it.
It depends on the quality of the paint, higher quality paints dry darker while cheaper priced paints tend to dry lighter, also two coats make the colour richer and ensure all the old pint is covered and not pulled back (little dots where the paint shrinks back exposing the old paint) when dry.
Everything has its beauty but not everyone sees it.

As above. Always amazes me how people scrimp on not buying testers then end up buying 2/3 tubs of paint because their not happy with the colour. There a couple of quid, better to be sure.

Though tbf, had a customer this weekend buy some dulux jasmine white satinwood, returned it looking quite angry and saying it was a different colour. Start preparing myself for the usual 'depend where your putting it, what the light is like, the base etc etc etc'. Opened the tin and it was bright green. Yeh, fair enough, i think this one is faulty!

Be prepared OP, if you do want to try and return it, normally its sent away to the manufacturer's to be tested (for quality control and obviously if that one is bad 000's of litres from the same batch will also be bad) And their testing methods are very accurate. Depends which supplier though.
