Petrol ones have coil packs that fail which diesels don't have. Petrols need spark plugs replacing every third service which diesels don't have - overall it is about the same.
The costs are very much different, however. As are the probabilities of failiure, such as say a choked up EGR or Injector.0 -

Depends on the car. My car doesn't suffer from any of these.0 -
Oh well, no further forward.
ATM I'm driving a £500 fiesta which I bought originally for my wife. Then she got her corsa so we put the fiesta up for sale. However, my 307 started playing up so I had the fiesta to fall back on (until I either sell the 307 and get something else or get the 307 repaired).
Think I'll stick with the diesel. I spotted a 2002 plate astra club 1.7 dti estate for £1100 (taxed for six months and tested for ten). Its a trader so there probably are some hidden suprises and i'm guessing no history, no documents and incorrect mileage. Still if I get it for £1000 it could be a good buy.

Okay I'm starting to look at cars now, need to get one quick because my temporary car is not very enjoyable for my 60+ mile daily commute to work.
I've spotted a car and wondered if someone could offer advice?
Its a 2003/4 Vauxhall Signum 2.2 dti elite. Not the best MPG, group 10 insurance and tax band J. However its an automatic (so ideal to aid my leg problem) and has a timing chain so no possibility of a timing/cam belt failure (they are the same thing right?).
If this car is no good I'm also considering:
- 2002 Astra 1.7 dti club estate
- 2003 Focus 1.8 TDCI
