Cracked shower drain!

[IMG][/img]100_1945_zps12298e2f.jpgHelp, I've just noticed a crack on the plastic shower drain, (sorry about the grotty photo but there's usually a plastic cover over this ) the top flange flexes up and down when pulled against the shower tray, exposing a crack along the sidewall of the waste. I'm hoping this won't be a major job but I fear the worst. I imagine the waste/drain unit is only a matter of a few pounds but fitting will involve a major amount of work. Please correct me if I'm wrong as it's a fairly recent fully tiled bathroom.
The thing that worries me is if the water goes through the crack I assume it will eventually find it's way through the ceiling (although as yet there are no evident signs of this)
One other thought is that would it be possible to do a repair to the crack in situ? ie. with some waterproof silicone sealant etc.
Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

What does recent mean? Your installation or someone elses? If the latter and its still within warranty (either workmanship or kit) then get the guy back. There is no fix for this. Once its cracked, its cracked. Every time you put weight on it it will crack some more.

Any chance of a pic or two?

    Cheers

Keystone is right. You should also be avoiding using the shower until ts fixe. If its a raised shower tray it's relatively easy to change but if it's a low profile shower tray it's more complex.

Well if you remember I'm involved with a towel rail corroding which you gratefully replied to and which is ongoing of which the store I bought the bathroom from referred me to the manufacturer. Now if this waste kit is covered I feel that they'll go down the same route and possibly the manufacturer will just send me a replacement kit but the thing is the store sublets the labour to a bathroom fitter and therefore won't accept any blame regarding the fitting. So I can't blame the fitter for the cracked waste kit and therefore can't expect him to replace it for free. So I'll have the part but will have to pay someone to fit it.
  • Easy job just get a new shower trap ,unscrew the defected part in photo and fit just new top section of trap, with plumbers mate or seal ring between tray and top of trap..Whilst doing make sure bottom of trap doesnt fall away so you cant locate new top..

I feel that it's the latter but I'm not sure. I can't see any way of gaining access to the underneath of the shower tray without removing the complete shower! Please tell me there is another way.

Is this as easy as it sounds? Bearing in mind I can't get underneath the shower tray and with that in mind how would I unscrew it?
  • dont need to get under tray unsrew just the top by replacing top grate and using the trap basket you have removed from inside as it is castleated on the bottom to fit the grating turn in anti clockwise direction then replace with new

no no no no don't use plumbers mate, it already looks like the waste is sat on plumbers mate & if he has used that underneath as well then as sure as eggs are eggs if they do as you suggest & just un-screw the top when you change it it will leak, use mastic (sealant) to bed it down on & try to get to the underneath & clean the washer & the tray around the waste opening.

IMO that crack has been caused by either a faulty fitting or the installer tightening it too much in any event the installer should change it FOC even if he goes to the merchant & they replace it.
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

Trap basket? The only thing I removed was the chrome cover which rests in the cut outs as shown in the photo.
I assume by your answer that there should be a trap basket and therefore I have no tool to remove the old one?
