It depends often on your supervisor on final year research projects, some will read drafts and others won't, just luck of the draw who you get.

I do disagree that asking for help constitues spoon feeding or laziness tho....for some it is about improving what you are doing rather than handing the same level of essay each time. Without help you will never really know whether what you did was good or bad and therefore cant improve?

I agree with much of what you've said regarding the standards at A level and how poorly they can prepare you for university study. My comments about spoonfeeding were not meant to apply to the situation of asking for help and discussing your work with your tutor, which is obviously part of the learning process. It was comments like,

"I could hand it in and risk getting a low mark as it isn't what the S was looking for, or holding onto it for longer and then having to use revision time to amend my essay in line with his feedback "

which I considered to be looking for spoonfeeding rather than developing independent judgement and learning.

You go to university to be taught and to learn from the Masters. In a subject as complex as mine you do need a lot of guideance from lecturers as the readings are so difficult.

what subject are you doing that seems to be so difficult as to need so much extra help from all and sundry? All subjects at university are difficult in some areas and not so in others - stop claiming that yours is so much more than everyone elses.

  • Teaching students is not necessarily a lecturer's major role in life. I agree with Melancholly that your attitude illustrates just what happens when students view themselves as consumers. Education is not and should never become a commodity!

Perhaps you could buy a degree from the internet; you'd probably get as much from this as you will from studying. If you pay extra they'll probably sell you a first!

    I'm not at University.

Philosophy and the paper are unreadable without help.

All I meant was I have pitched my guide to ECGs as quite technical with alot of detail into arrhythmia causes, treatments as in a hospital setting because that is what I do everyday at work. There's lots and lots of information to fit into 2,000 words as you can write entire books on them. It depends on what level he wants it at, which would have helped me to decide what parts to emphasise on and which parts to skim over. My main problem (as i have done uni before) is assuming the reader knows the simple and going too far into depth and missing the simple things they have determined in their marking scheme

Incidently I just had an email from a tutor on sick leave :( he is marking some work and contacted me to say the level, detail and scope I pitched my work for pharmacology was WAAAAY beyond that expected for a level 1 course, (That is what happens when you don't have a work limit! :T )

I do understand that yours is an unusual case so some of my comments may not have been totally appropriate for your situation. On the other hand, there's nothing wrong with working way beyond what's expected; why not excel if it's within your capabilities to do so?

If you had fully read my posts, instead of picking out the bits you didn't agree with, you would've noted that it's my partner who currently attends Uni (his last yr thankfully), and it's his experiences that has led me to my opinions.

After saying that, he studied for a HND and passed with distinction at a separate Uni to the one he currently attends, and his experience there was a wholly positive one.

Next yr he'll attend another Uni to study for his Masters. Fingers crossed he has a better experience.
