car insurance question

Hi everyone....

I was involved in an accident which was 100% NOT my fault. A lorry side swiped me as it changed lanes and wrote off my car. Now when I go to renew my insurance with my new car I am told that as the enquiry is still going on the accident is classed as MY FAULT until otherwise proved. I have statements saying the lorry went into me, police reports etc. Is this normal?? Am I going to have to wait until my (now ex) insurance company complete their investigation until I get a competitive quote again?

Thanks

(HASTINGS DIRECT by the way...)

Yes. Until the claim is settled and blame apportioned, your NCD is reduced. You get a refund once claim is settled. It is one of those unfortunate things if your renewal happens to be whilst a claim is still in progress.

Before you change insurer, you should make sure the cost of amendment from the new insurer and how they treat non-fault claims will impact on the premium (e.g. if they charge £50 to amend and a non-fault claim premium is say £30 more than no-claims then that is £80 additional cost which you may not incur with your existing insurer)

Explain to your new company and ask them to agree that if you get your ncd reinstated they will amend your premium and refund your overpayment.

Yeah. Until its all settled then there is always a risk the claim could do a u turn.

Until its done and dusted they usually withold the no claims etc.

So you need to do quotes with the lower no claims discount you have and explain about the ongoing claim. When its sorted you should get a discount.

Switching insurers is never a a good idea, especially if you've no told them of the pending claim with be other company. It is not OK to ignore this as you were 'not to blame' and could cause problems down the line.

Nah, switching insurers is almost always a good idea so you benefit from new customer discounts/avoid renewal penalties

Answering all the proposal questions honestly is essential too

I think Buzby meant that switching insurers whilst you have an ongoing claim is often not a good idea.

You could have asked the insurer to match any quotes you had found on the internet.
