You need to find out what point they want to pay you on. If you are in the NHs, you'll only go up one point on the scale, if coming from outside, they will see about matching. If neither is applicable you need to state x years of experience (work & otherwise) that means your salary needs to jump.

Sorry, but it's the evils of paying for AfC

I work for the NHS too....and with all the new 'bandings' most people do tend to join on the lowest scale and work their way up (unless it is quite a 'high up' job).

Ask what band you are going to be put on, find out the salary - there is no harm in asking.

Always negotiate the salary BEFORE starting work in a job. The interview, or post offer, is the ONLY time to do this!!!

Paying you an extra £1k or so a year is a lot cheaper than re-advertising the job...........;)

Different NHS trusts seem to have interpreted the new Agenda for Change rules quite differently.

In theory you should start at the bottom of that scale unless you have come from another job at the same banding. In theory you can only go up one increment a year (except for a few specified professions who can advance more quickly such as midwives). In theory you have to show evidence of your knowledge and skills to get through two 'gateways' on the pay scale (one is a year above the bottom of the scale the other is 2 or 3 years before the end).

In practise some NHS trusts are finding it very hard to recruit and are willing to interpret the rules more flexibly.

Bear in mind though that it might not be cheaper to give you more than readvertise the post. They may well have a second choice person from the interview who they could offer the job to without the need to readvertise.

Hi.... thanks everyone for your replies. My offer letter states that my pay band is 4 and Salary Scale is POINT 9.

    Hope that helps.

Thats £14739 for FT. You have actaully been offered higher than on the payscale - the bottom point being point 7 at £13914.

Re: talking monet at interviews, I have always clarified salary as my final question at interview, and during the many interviews I have conducted when recruiting for NHS staff, most people have asked re: salary. Do not be afraid to talk money - it seems to be acepted practice!

Regarding the childcare, I am afraid that many NHS managers would view it as your problem and not theirs. Hope things work out!

Just checked you OP - the salary scale seems more than what is currently listed as band 4 - wondering if I have an old sheet i.e. without this years payrise on?

According to the 2006 payscales, they have placed you on the bottom of the scale which seems to be usual practice for 'new starters'.
