Cheap (sub £2k) car for motorway commute

My wife did 15k a year in a 1.5 Peugeot 106 diesel, that did it for 4 years. Now moved on to a 1.4 diesel Citreon C3. 55 and 65 mpg respectively.
The 106 cost £500, and just kept going to 160,000 miles before we changed it.0 -
Good bit of money saving!
The AX 1.5d (which is basically a 106 with a different body) had the record for being the most economical car in the world for a lot of years.Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
