    You stated that "many people can't make an interview at short notice", that was not just referring to the OP, was it? :p

    Again, why should the employer make an exception for the OP, when they have countless other candidates to choose from?
    The Jobcentre is incompetent & isn't doing a good job for the department store.

    Again, useful for department to to know this.

    Because perhaps they have time limits to stick to? I would think that 1 interviewee unable to attend means very little in the grand scheme of things.

    Maybe, maybe not.

    I wouldn't think a new department store was restricted to one day.
    I would hope they had planned their recruitment process to advertise their vacancies & get good candidates.

    If you have the attitude that individuals don't really matter, then you're making a big mistake.
