Windows Media Player File Associations - not

I have a new installation of Win7 64 bit and use "Media Player Classic" for all video playback. However, I will occasionally need to use the Microsoft Windows Media Player but I can't see any way of running WMP without setting the default file associations.
When I start WMP it comes up with the "Welcome to WMP" wizard. If I select "Custom Settings" it takes me through a couple fo screens and comes up with one screen with two options:
- Make WMP the default player
- Choose file types
You have to select one of these to be able to continue. If I select the chose file types it then take me to a File Association screen to select the files to be opened by WMP. The problem is, with the exception .mp4 files, all other files are selected and grey out - ie, I can't deselect them. I have to cancel out of this screen and then shut down the wizard and hence cannot start WMP.
Any suggestions?

Never let it get you down... unless it really is as bad as it seems.

Im sure you can change the file associations back to Media Player Classic after you have installed Windows Media Player.
Either via settings in the media player, or file association settings on the pc.
Someone who knows better than me will im sure be able to help you further

Thanks, I'm sure I could go through this process but I'd rather try and avoid WMP changing them in the first place. I'm sure that in a previous version of WMP I could get it started without it taking control of all media file associations
Anybody else got any ideas?Never let it get you down... unless it really is as bad as it seems.0 -

From what I remember don't choose custom settings, just choose 'automatic' or 'manual'.0 -

So did you sort this by not choosing custom setup?0
