Most of my jobs have had an hour and a half commute each way. Now I am freelance one of my jobs can take me over 3 hours each way which can be a bit much.

When I worked a minimum wage job I sometimes took about 90 minutes to get to work, which involved 2 buses (London), or a bus and a mile walk, depending on the weather. It was slightly less at night, as I finished 3am sometimes, so I had to walk that mile to the bus stop.

Now I have a job in a career, my shortest commute has been about 30 minutes, longest about 90 again, but those were short term contracts, so it was fine.

I think 90 minutes is probably the max commute for anyone earning about 20k or under in my opinion! Any more than that, then maybe commute time can become longer if necessary.
  • To me, anything under 1 hour is great.

Current commute is in practice 2hrs to be guaranteed a seat on the train - can do it in 1:45 but your standing for 30-45 minutes on the train. Its ok but wouldn't want to do anything longer.

Ultimately for me it is self inflicted as my UK work is going to be 95% of the time in London and I (somewhat) choose to live in the sticks.

I was offered a job locally but it was a 30% pay cut and a 30-45 minute commute I'd guess

I'd give up a few quid to have a job that I could walk to, cycle to, catch a bus to, or a train .... and that had abundant free parking for the days I wanted to drive (p155ing down/freezing).

An ideal distance to work would be a mile ..... but most of my jobs have been 25-40 miles away, with driving being the only option. When your car breaks down you're stuffed.
  • 1:40 in and 1:50 home each day. I really enjoy it. I write in the morning and catch up on DVDs on the way home.

But you need to get into the routine otherwise a 30 min commute can be horrid.
  • Got to weigh up cost of travel as well. A 45 minute bus ride to our local town costs about £8.00 return. In the same 45 minutes, I could in theory get to the outskirts of Portsmouth 37 miles away. OK I would do that if I was lucky enough to have a job paying enough to warrant it,, but considering fuel cost for a 75 mile return drive, for a bog standard job, it is the cost factor which weighs more for me.
