What is a reasonable commute time to get to work?

I think one hour is just about okay. My current jobs takes 52 minutes, I manage it okay, obviously like the commute time to be shorter, but there is nothing I can do. My previous job took 20-25 minutes.

I think anything up to 1 hour is a reasonable commute time. I spend 8-9 hours at work, add on another two hours of commute time, then that's is nearly half the day gone.

What do you consider a reasonable commute time?

  • I think it depends on the job tbh. My current job is home based but when I am working away from home (4 days out of 5), I can have anything from a 3.5hr commute each way to a 45min commute each way. The 7hr commute days are a killer :)
  • I think 1 hr is enough... According to the government (for JSA) you must be prepared to travel up to 90 minutes each way, which i think can be too much especially with the price of petrol as well..Because if you have someone on minimum wage (or thereabouts) and they have 3 hrs travelling per day, their wages can be taken up in travelling expenses..
  • I do an hour to work and a bit more on the way back (as the roads are busier) - I'm coping but wouldn't be able to handle any longer
  • My first job was in central London. I spent five hours a day on trains and another ten actually doing work. Never again
  • My current communte is 45 mins one way. But it totally depends on the wage your getting paid. For me, I don't think its worth travelling that long for minimum wage (with the given petrol prices) However, as I haven't got work close by, travelling further is the only option to squeeze out a living to pay the ever-rising costs of living.

Depends what the job is and how much they are paying. Certainly don't think one hours commute would be okay for a NMW role especially with spiralling petrol costs at the moment if you have to drive:eek:
  • I used to do 1.5-2 hours each way into London at my first job and hated it, then worked from home but with once (or twice) a week commutes of anything up to 3-4 hours in each direction.

Now I work from home pretty much full time. Anything more than 30 minutes I don't think I would want to do any more, not unless they'd pay me £75k+!
    Thinking critically since 1996....

    Completely job dependent.

I currently commute 11 minutes, and begrudge the days when that stretches to 15 minutes. In previous roles I have driven 3 hours each way, and have been happy to do so.

busses, trains and tubes are used for most people as I know no one who drives to London

Wait for busses and trains here, take you more than 90 minutes to get to work...And the cost of public transport is disgraceful. In fact it would be cheaper to use the car.(and thats saying something isn't it?)
