I currently have private feedback as I was buying gifts and didn't want the recipient to see what and how much they cost. Some people will have a genuine reason for private feedback, others will be dodgy :-)

With Italy the lost items could well be genuine. Even my Italian friend will not ship things home to certain regions as nothing ever gets there.

I have had a couple of problems to Italy a few years ago, and understand their postal system isn't perfect.

But the previous buyers in Italy have been very understanding when things get lost/arrive late. No Paypal claims or bad feedback, just calm communication.

This one just put in a claim without warning and then left a bit fat neg a few days later. Capitalised of course, like all rational feedback is.

And this chap seems to give negatives most of the time. Just put " site:feedback.ebay.co.uk scedevnet " in Google search. Or he does leave positives too, but many of them show that the item purchased "wasn't received" but I'm guessing the sellers gave a refund immediately in those cases.
  • As Soolin points out, the Italian postal service is renowned for all the wrong reasons - few would disagree, even patriotic Italians.

But I've seen the same goings on as Rapido - essentially chancers who routinely claim an item never arrived and leave a negative and adverse DSRs if they don't get an immediate refund... as well as the free item, post free. To try to hide their long trails of deception and feedback sabotage, they utilise private feedback.

The problem is that if you're a small private seller, if you're unlucky enough to run into one of these crooked opportunist, your feedback and DSRs suffer - run into two within the same 12 months and you could completely lose your account, due what looks like underperformance.

From another recent thread, it looks like feedback saboteurs are finally being targeted by eBay, so the game may be up for them, though regrettably, it may be too late for some small/new sellers, who were unfortunate enough to fall foul of these antics before getting established.

Yeah come to think of it. Someone from Italy messaged me the other week and wanted to buy my whole stock off a collectible item as they were a collector. I messages back and quoted £60 for the shipping as that is what rm wanted to send it fully tracked over there.

They never came back to me so I thought that might be a buyer wanting something for nothing or even free. Not sure though.
