Xbox 360 hard drive upgrade

Just wondering whats the best way to upgrade a 4gb Xbox 360?

I've seen that you can open up an old drive and use that

Also seen some drives packaged as Xbox drives on ebay, but don't think they come with the emulator software to play older games.

Finally, I've read you can just buy a laptop drive and add the emulator software to it, this appears to be the cheapest way. However it seems a bit technical, I have a 10 year old desktop, could I use that to make the laptop drive work with the Xbox?

I was looking at this a few months ago, and got the impression it wasn't as simple as cloning the existing drive onto a larger one, popping it into the xbox hdd enclosure and using it. It seemed like ms have some code on the hdd which doesn't like to be copied..... I may have got the wrong end of the stick, but...

Easiest & cheapest way is to use a 16GB USB memory stick in the xbox.

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
  • If you use something like the datel xport you can actually just swap the drive out for a 2.5" drive

    above shows the best method
  • Can I do that with a desktop or old hard drive enclosure rather than taking out the laptop drive?
  • You don't use xbox live do you or connect it to the internet? Sometimes modding the xbox can get it banned from the internet!

The laptop drive would be most ideal as it fits straight in but theres nothing to stop you using other drives

Datel xport won't work on a a 4 gig model unless you jump through hoops, depends how technical you are.
  • £35 for laptop drive and about the same for second hand Xbox drive on ebay, so think will just buy secondhand off ebay as don't have to mod the drive then.

Will all original Xbox drive have the emulator software on to enbable play older games?

All XBOX 360s can play the same XBOX games, yes.
