Password Storage ??

Like lots of people I have many, many passwords for all sorts of things.
Now getting to the stage that I keep forgetting some of the least used ones !!
I presume there is a ( free ) online storage facility that you can access from any computer & look up your passwords ???
Anybody any thoughts ???
:D

  • There are lots of free pasword managers out there (just google it).

They are basically small programs that allow you to enter the relevant details and save them.

Personally, I use Password Safe, however, as stated previously, there are lots of choices out there (I am sure people will come along and recommend many others).

As it is a relatively small program, I have it stored on my laptop and also carry it around on a usb stick I have constantly with me :D

Datavault seems to be neither Open Source, nor free.

As above, Keepass is both, and very highly regarded.

I've never been keen on the online services, because you are dependent on how good the provider is at securing their servers - and there has been a major security failure on one such online service in the recent past.

Have a look here for an independent review of password managers:

    http://www.techsupportalert.com/best-free-web-form-filler-password-manager.htm

I have used LastPass for the last couple of years and wouldn't be without it...excellent, never had any problems. It's free and works with IE, Firefox, Opera, Palemoon, Chrome and SRWare Iron but not Maxthon (which is a pity as personally I find Maxthon the quickest browser using the least resources, but not being being able to use LastPass makes it a no-no for me).

LastPass also includes a password generator

    Another vote for Keepass.

There are two things that made me choose Keepass.

    1. We use it at work and they don't approve anything that isn't secure and well proven.

    2. There are versions for all the major operating systems. I use Windows on my Work laptop, Linux on my work desktop, I have the OS X version on my MacBook and iMac and the android version on my Samsung Galaxy S2

This means that I have a single password file on all my machines which make keeping things up to date easy.

It is a superb program and it's free.

I just use a flat file, encrypted using Steganos' Locknote, where I double-click on the (renamed) EXE, put the password in, and look through the file for what I want. It doesn't plug the password in like KeePass does, but it is also free, and sufficient for my purposes.
  • Thanks Toad, i've kept all my passwords in an untitled txt file on Dropbox for access on all my devices but like the sound of Keepass for it's password access and encryption.

I guess nothing's 100% safe but I'll give it a try, downloading now...
  • Think 'l give Keepass ago, have been meaning to use something to manage my passwords as I am terrible at remembering some of them!

Secure keepass (or whichever you choose) with a very strong, but unforgettable password. Test it here http://howsecureismypassword.net/
