I have just bought a van that is taxed until end Oct but I don't need to insure it yet as its going to be parked up securely off road.
how can I SORN it when I don't have new log book in my name yet?
Is it right that I can also reclaim the remaining tax back?

You need to send the V5 form to the DVLA with a hand written sorn form downloaded from the DVLA website. They'll then sorn it and change owner at the same time. I can't remember what the form is, but if you phone up the DVLA, they'll let you know.0

the seller has the v5 form as he needs to inform DVLA he is not the owner anymore0

Then there will be a delay till you get the new V5. Alternatively, if the seller hasn't sent the V5 off yet, he could SORN it right away before sending the V5 off to change keepers.
As for the tax - if you cash in the tax disc before the end of September you may get a months refund. If you do it after 30 September you will not get a refund for the remaining month. Doesn't exactly seem worth it to bother, not as if it has 10 or 11 months tax remaining, or even 4 or 6. A refund of one remaining month will be less than £20 probably.0 -
OP, this is the webpage you should read.0
