washer/dryer smells!!

hey all, i usually only lurk on the DFW boards so apologies if i am posting here incorrectly!

we have just had a new kitchen installed with a washer/dryer. the first few times i used it my washing didn't smell great but to be fair, i think i was overloading it and the loads i did were filthy from the dirt and dust of the kitchen fitting as well as a few towels we had soaked up dirty water from when we removed the sink and pipes.

washing is now fine, but my washing smells funny after using the dryer. it's not an awful smell but it's not nice. you can't smell any washing powder at all and the load actually smells kinda plasticy. it's weird. obviously there is no vent now as the dryer is condensed through the pipes, but surely this wouldn't make the washing smell bad?

my boyf and his kitchen fitter friend fitted the kitchen and they replaced all the water pipes behind the sink, dishwasher, washer/dryer and cupboards with plastic flexi pipe. i'm a bit worried that the flexi pipes are melting or something with the heat of the dryer! would this be possible? if not, has anyone else experienced weird smelling clothes after using the dryer on a washer/dryer.

i was hoping the smell would subside after using it a few times and maybe it was just newness but its still there.

any replies would be very much appreciated!

Have you checked that the pipes are all flowing downwards and are draining properly?
  • If it doesn't turn out to be the pipes or any electrical issue, then I have heard you can get rid of unwanted smells in the drum (if it's from there the smell is emanating) by putting bicarbonate of soda into an old sock (tied at the end, obviously) and running the tumble dryer for a bit while it's empty.

I haven't tried this, by the way, as I have never had an issue. Just something that may help...

thanks guys - my sister has a washer/dryer and hates it - she also reckons her washing smells and it crumples up the clothes!(surley its something we are doing wrong though - i mean not everyone can have this problem!) i'm assuming the pipes are all fitted correctly as the guy who fitted it is quite experienced but you never know! as i said, the washing smells fine when it just the washing machine being used.

i only dry towels, sheets, towels and pants and socks in the dryer and i always just bung them on at the highest temp for as long as possible! this one has settings for time or how dry you want your clothes. i had just been setting the timer for as long as i could (120 mins :o) but i am gonna try it this time for the extra dry setting - i am assuming it has a sensor or something that it can tell itself when the clothes are dry?? maybe this might make a difference.

Thanks for the bicarb tip RetracA, i will defo give this a try anyway whether i get the drying issue sorted or not!

  • Clean the filter on the washer, washer dryer.

Pour vinegar into every compartment of the washer drawer and run empty on the hottest longest wash

    Do not overfill your washer.

    Do not overfill your dryer.

Reduce by at least half the amount of detergent you use.

Do not use fabric softener use vinegar instead (clothes do not come out smelling of vinegar)
    I'm not that way reclined

Jewelry? Seriously? Sheldon you are the most shallow, self-centered person I have ever met. Do you really think that another transparently-manipu... OH, IT'S A TIARA! A tiara; I have a tiara! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me!
  • thanks faerie spangles! - i will defo be giving this a try as i am trying to organize swapping all of my cosmetic/household cleaners etc for natural cleaners anyway so this can start me off!
