Nerines - Guernsey Lillies

I bought a number of Nerines whilst visiting Guernsey 3 years ago. I planted as per the instructions (not too deep) in well drained soil. The bulbs initially produced a few spiky leaves but as yet no flowers. Should I persevere for another season or lift and perhaps replant? The research I have done tells me that Nerines can survive in fairly poor soil.

Any further advice welcome.

You've covered the general stuff, like following proper planting procedure for these, but with questions on this board, it often helps to give some indication of your location, aspect, soil type etc.

It's therefore maybe of limited help if I say that I moved mine 100 miles in 2009, and they've flowered every year since. I'm 500' up and they're in full sun on dry, (not this year!) reasonably fertile soil, facing due south.

Perhaps yours, being purchase plants, have to grow for a few years to reach flowering potential? Even in my last garden, where I abused a few by siting them in dry ground on the north side of tall conifers, they still performed.

Thanks Dave. I live in south east Scotland. I have seen Nerines growing locally so do know they survive here. Mine are planted south facing in reasonable soil.

I will persevere for another year and hope for the best.

Since my last post I discovered that one of my Nerines had produced a flower shoot.

Unfortunately today whilst digging out my faded bedding plants I knocked the flower shoot off!

That's life, another year another Nerine I hope! :D

Fwiw my mothers stopped flowering or the past two years. I t hink they probably got congested.

I do prefer the common name bare naked ladies for these though. So much more jolly than nerine I think.

That i-Pad has a lot to answer for! :rotfl:But aren't 'bare naked ladies,' lillies?

'Nerine' is Greek, meaning something like 'of the sea.' (from Nereid)

Of course, i know from experience that dancing round the garden in my skin In November turns me quite bright pink too. Not sure why, because usually one goes bright white or mule with cold.
