Spanish Bank Account

My son is going to Spain next week as part of his degree course. He'll be there til next May. He has a Classic account with Lloyds and their charges for debit card transactions are frightening. He'll be paid in euros by the school that he'll be teaching at. I think he should open another bank account there. Does anyone have any knowledge of any decent banks, and whether we can apply for an account before he travels?
