Buying a puppy.

My brother is looking to buy a puppy. He has been on the Pet4homes website and emailed a seller on there. However when he went to visit the seller he was very dubious about him for a few reasons.
Can anyone recommend anywhere he could get a puppy in the Bolton/Bury/ChorleyWigan area please. He has been to the Leigh dogs home to look but he really wants to get a young puppy and they were all older dogs.

I think it's Leigh Dogs Home that has a bit of an iffy reputation so would be wary.

American, but still pretty applicable - http://members.tripod.com/antique_fcr/goodbreeder.html0 -
What about Manchester Dogs Home? He might have to visit a few times and be patient but he wouldn't have to wait too long before pups came in.0

If he is after a specific breed it is worth using the Kennel Club Puppy finder or googling the breed club and seeing if he can get a breeder listing - the secretary can usually provide this.:j Proud Member of Mike's Mob :j0

You dont say what breed he wants but please (pretty please with cherries on top) get him to look at http://www.homealabrador.net/phpbb3/viewforum.php?f=11&sid=28df14fbbecbb58ef77e5ad9436c0f64
even if they dont have pups at the mo (they have a few young dogs though) it is amazing how often they do it may be worth putting a name down.
They are an amazing rescue which I support even though I am in London!!

When I got my puppy he'd been advertised in a gundog magazine that one of O/H's colleagues at work subscribed to.
He knew we'd recently lost our old dog and wanted another dog.
The breed mix was labrador/whippet first cross, just like the old fella had been. We drove for hours to the farmhouse where the puppies were, and the minute I saw them I knew one of them was right for us.
I chose my Jack because he was the image of my old dog, even down to the one white toe on the back foot.
He was the perfect puppy for me right from the start - he's 4 now and I'm delighted with him.
So the small ads might be your best bet.0 -
Free ad type papers can be chockablock with BYBs and puppyfarms though - a reputable breeder will be unlikely to use this sort of advertising as they will have built up a reputation through word-of-mouth and in shows, etc.
Your Jack may be the perfect dog now but I really hope you don't end up suffering the heartbreak of a dog with health conditions caused by indescriminate breeding.

Don't think by going to the kc your brother is automatically going to get a good pup, the kc register pups from puppy farms, there are good breeders in the kc but unless you know exactly what you looking for in a breeder I would steer clear. I usually tell people to have a look at the breed clubs, they are usually very good at weeding out the bad breeders and they would point your brother in the right direction.0

Please don't go to any of the advertising sites, that is encouraging backyard breeding/ puppy farming. Can't now find the thread but one recently the puppy cost several thousands pounds in vet care before being PTS.
I am sure there is more than one general rescue serving your area, hey don't all have centres you can walk into http://www.dogpages.org.uk/ or breed rescue or the breed club. Declutterbug-in-progress.⭐️⭐️⭐️ ⭐️⭐️0 -

Jack wasn't from a puppy farm. His owners were the residents of the dairy farm, and the man was the local vet.
It was a planned breeding from their own two dogs, a female black labrador and a male blue whippet. They didn't expect the 11 puppies that resulted though! They kept 2 themselves and already had advance homes for six so only the remaining three were advertised.
I've got no problem at all with that but I'd never buy from a puppy farm.0
