Cost effective long distance commuting car

Options
Hi,

I'm looking for some advice. Basically I drive 25,000 miles per year. I would like to know what car would be most economic to run. Currently I drive a Ford Focus, but would consider something smaller (but not too much - I am 6'3)

Cheers.

    The lowest tax
    Cheapest insurance
    Does the most mpg
    And has the least depreciation.

If your Focus is a diesel, you're going to be hard pushed to beat it and the purchase of another car will negate any savings you'd make on fuel.

One thing you've got to factor which is as important if not more when doing high mileage is how relaxing or tiring it is to drive the vehicle. 25k in a Focus or Mondeo is going to be a lot more pleasant to do than 25k in a Ford Ka. A friend and our family went to France a couple of years ago - 700 miles each way done in one run. He was in a Clio, us in a Mondeo. He got out the other end knackered and we could've done the same again.

Doing 25k a year, it'll depreciate like hell no matter what it is.
  • What sort of budget are you looking at? If you have the funds a Golf Bluemotion will be very economical whilst being very comfortable. I currently have a Megane 1.5dCi (new shape) and get around 600miles out of a tank whilst wearing lead boots. If I drove it economically I reckon at least 700miles between fill ups is possible.

Thanks. There's some good ideas there. I think I'm looking around the £10-15K mark. All suggestions welcome. The Megane in particular is a model i had not seriously considered before and will look into.
