Rewireing - how can i check to see if it needs to be done?

As per post really - anything i can check/tell tail signs of rewiring needing to be done? Flat is approx 50 years old.

Here is a pic of a ceiling rose socket which was exposed

    Looks not too bad, not enough detail to see.

    Things to look for

    Sockets on skirting board (mostly these indicate older wiring)

    Light switches on door facings

    old consumer units, with fuse wire (not necessarily a bad indication, but if it's there with other things listed here it's question raiser)

    No earth bonding (of gas or water pipes)

    Have a look in the loft (if you have one) , if the wiring is black and looks like rubber (not grey pvc) then it's not a good thing. ps don't touch it- if it's rubber it may be very brittle and give up the ghost if you move it.


    I would suggest getting someone in for a visual check
    You should use a competent person for the work, links below

    Thanks very much - thats was very helpful. My flat (no loft) shows most of the above signs so i think its required.
