Forgot to buy travel insurance - help!

Hello,
Stupidly, I forgot to buy travel insurance before leaving the UK for the USA. I am now in America, trying to get insurance, but have been told that, as I have left already, I cannot purchase a policy. Aaargh!
Does anyone know of an insurance company that will still take me? Surely there must be one?! An additional problem is that I do have a pre-existing medical condition (Type 1 Diabetes), which I suspect may complicate things.
I'd really appreciate any help that anyone can provide, as I'm freaking out about this. I'm in the USA for almost 3 months, and simply cannot be uninsured for that entire time! I naively assumed that I could simply purchase a policy starting tomorrow, and would not be covered for my trip up until now (where luckily nothing has gone wrong), but would be from tomorrow. This doesn't seem to be the case though.
Please help! Thanks,
Joanne

im pretty sure the above lets you start insurance after leaving the UK.
may be expensive though.0 -

Just out of curiousity have you experienced something warranting a claim?0

Thanks all - appreciated. I went with Nomads, but it was expensive (3x what I would have had to pay in advance).
Nope - don't need to claim for anything, but felt very uncomfortable being over here without insurance, in case I need medical cover or anything.
This is definitely something I won't forget about again.0
