Mice - advice needed, I am going nuts

We caught two mice last week in the kitchen after seeing one.
I have since laid peanut butter in the mouse traps for three days and nothing has been caught.
I have also laid some poison down and a small corner has been nibbled on, I've seen no mouse droppings though which is quite puzzling. We had 5-10 mouse droppings under the kitchen cabinets last week.
I am so scared of them and I know I am being stupid but I have four young children and I am so scared they will become ill.
Do you think I could have more? Do you think I should call the council to lay stronger poison?
I sound like a nervous wreck
Any advice would be a great help.

Chocolate and a humane trap. Problem will be sorted over a night or two.0

Always work on the theory that where there is one, there are more. Mice breed fast!
On the other hand, if you've caught two you might be lucky and have got mum and dad leaving the littleuns to wither on the vine. Sorted.
I would simply continue to leave traps out for a week or two. If you catch no more, you're in the clear.
Ofc ourse you also need to
a) keep the kitchen very clean (esp the floor)
b) if you can find entry holes, block them.0 -
Can't agree with humane mouse traps at all. Mice have to be dealt with properly or they come back.
You have to break their backs! The key things with mouse traps is 'less is more'. Smear a small amount of peanut butter in the centre of the plate on the trap so they are forced to step on it. Hey presto, mouse in 2 halves. If you put a load of bait on the plate, they nibble at the edges which won't set it off.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -
We found when we had mice that they were coming from a neighbour's house (who were very, err, untidy people). Might be worth asking neighbours if they have mice too.0

Do you know where they are getting in? Even if you have caught a few if you don't deal with the entry point, they will come back. If you can get a pencil through a hole, a mouse will fit. Look around, favoured points are behind kitchen worktops where the pipes come through the wall, or under the bath. If you find holes block them with scrunched up balls of tin foil - this won't stop them coming in, but if they are using that point to get in, they will chew the foil or push it out and you know they've been there. Then get the holes properly filled to prevent more getting in.
Don't panic over your children's health. I appreciate its not nice having mice, but believe me, bird droppings that the kids probably come into contract with every time they play outside or go to the park, is far more hazardous to health than mouse droppings, and we aren't all out shooting every bird in sight are we? Just make sure all you food is put away or stored in tubs and plastic boxes, so mice don't have anything else to eat!0 -
You are right to be concerned (especially for your children) as mice can transmit disease to humans, in some circumstances.
I've lived in the Swedish countryside for the last five years; when we first came here, we discovered mice were accessing the property by following the pipes into the house.
Several ways we got rid of them: first, I've never lived in a place with so many cats roaming around - basic kitchen hygiene and we also found an absolutely excellent mouse trap (http://www.clasohlson.com/se/Pr344878000/Pr344878000)
Haven't detected any more mice for about a year.
Best of luck!0 -

I had a major problem with mice in my house at one point I caught 11 in 1 week, i even had one trying to snuggle in bed with me one night . I bought a electro magnetic 4 in 1 plug in pest repeller . You can get them from Amazon for about £20 but they do work. Make sure it has the electro magnetic pulse as this is the bit that works. Within a few days they was all gone. I have some in my shed at the moment but i have the thing plugged in by the back door and none have ventured inside0

Easy peasy.....get a cat!
We had mice caused by dirty neighbours, they came into us and other neighbours and we were killing around four every night. I, like you, was a wreck - I had visions of chewed wiring and infested food cupboards:eek:
We got a cat, not a cute cuddly kitten but an 18month old little monkey and she has dealt with them meeces VERY swiftly!! :T No poison, no traps snapping and frightening the life of you, no more mice :T
She totally cleared the house within a week, not had one since she came in six years ago, think the mice smell the cat and clear off.Saving 1 animal wont change the world - but it will change the world for that 1 animal
