Gap year ????

Options
Hello,

Graduated and i have decided for sure(last minute i know) to take a gap year to Oz, and travelling. Plan is to leave in September from the US(where i have commitments for 3months from June) to Oz and then work there for 9months, maybe longer with travelling around asia during or after. Not looked into it all(will do an internet blast on it all this week) but i am def up for it, its happening.

My question to you is does anybody have any advoce and help! UI am doing it myself which is an issue as im shy. Also, time is an issue, does anybody know the best website to use to help me find work in Oz, recommendations, and maybe meet other travellers

Any help here would be mucgh appreciated

Hey. I went to Oz Dec 05 for 9 months on my own and loved it, you will have the best time. I went independently, i researched into programmes that promise the earth but all you need to do is get yourself some decnt backpacker insurance and you'll be fine. I flew to Sydney and stayed in Wake Up! It's a great place to start, you meet loads of people who are just starting out and loads of people who are about to go back home so you get loads of advice from them, and if you're lucky a load of freebies as they are over their luggage limit! As you move about you will hear about good places to go and places to avoid - pm me for more details, can talk for agea about it! As for jobs there's plenty in the cities - loads of recruitment agencies and plenty of bar work to be going at. in New south wales you'll need to pass a RSA (responsible serving of alcohol licence) which cost about £45. Then there's fruit picking which are always being advertised. Try and get a paid hourly job rather than by the bucket load cos you'll be working your sock off for hardly anything. I made loads of friends and met some wonderful people - you will have no trouble making friends, everyone is in the same boat, looking for friends or more to add to their travelling group. If you have any questions please pm me, ill be so pleased to help.
Come on baby, in our dreams we can live on misbehaviour.

I went to oz about 6 years ago so not sure if this has changed but if your starting in sydney i'd recommend visiting travellers contact point (https://www.travellers.com.au) on George street. sign yourself up there and they'll give u like a PO box for all your post (bank letters, etc). should be loads of ads on the noticeboards for accommodation and jobs plus free internet access.

after that u can sort out an aussie bank account, get your tax number and medicard.

as for jobs, i always stayed well clear of fruit picking. seemed like slave labour to me although u would meet other travallers doing that. I got most of my work through a job agency called Baytech Industrial. sign up with them.

    im well jealous.
What's it going to be, eh?
