Ha ha D.A. - the answer to your question is "bog all".

But I won't let that stop me! History is not my forte, however I think that many, many years ago mainland Britain was controlled by the French, who called it Grande Bretagne, ie Big Brittany - to distinguish it from the area known as Bretagne, ie Brittany, which still exists in modern day France.

The French never had control of any part of this island, hence we were never part of Grande Bretagne.

Oh, I've thought of how this relates to money saving - it's to do with delivery charges, eg "free delivery within UK" versus "free delivery within GB" - one costs us dearly. Or insurance people when you phone them and ask at the start of the call if they cover N.I., they say yes, then at the end of their form filling their computer tells them that they only cover GB (grrr!) - therefore the person taking the call doesn't know the difference between GB and UK. I expect there's more examples where it has an implication on services to NI residents.
