A couple of Questions about Housing benefit claim plz?

Ive recently claimed for housing/council tax benefit as me and my soon to be ex wife have split.
After a few letters asking me for other information today i received a letter saying that they wont backdate my HB claim from the day my ex moved out as i do not have a reason for good cause, The reason i gave was because my income went down when she moved out, could i appeal ?
I have not yet recieved anything saying what HB i will reveive. Will i hear somthing soon and does this mean ive been granted it ?
Sorry if these sound silly questions, i have never claimed anything like this in my life.
Thanks in advance.

Good cause is not because you may have been eligible earlier.
It's because you (for example) were unable to apply due to illness.
If you were able to apply, bit did not, backdating will rarely succeed.0 -
Thanks Rogerblack. Does this mean i will still get some HB ? As they havnt sent any other letter out yet.0

It would be odd to have made a decision on backdating, if you're not eligible at all.
But perhaps this happens.
Phone them, and check status is probably the best plan.0 -
Many thanks Rogerblack.0
