Best paint for woodwork

Hi,

Need recomendations on which paint to use for woodwork. I prefer the look of a satinwood or eggshell to high gloss.

Is waterbased best?

So use satinwood or eggshell then. If eggshell spirit based is better IMO but both have pluses and minuses.

Water based advantages, quick drying, stays white, very low odour, easy to clean brushes and rollers and is fairly hard wearing. Disadvantages. The quick drying part can be a pain when doing a large area or anything fiddly as the edge will go off before you have a chance to lay the paint off and you'll get a dry line. Waterbased also doesnt stick to traditional painted surfaces that well and you'll need a "sticks to anything" primer like 123 first. I hate satinwood myself - it feels like you are glossing with vinyl silk emulsion.

Oil based advantages: can be used over most other types of coating, not to much practice required putting it on, hard wearing finish. Disadvantages: odour, will go yellow over time (these days all too short after VOC 2010), will run but if it doesn't then you aren't putting enough on, clean up using white spirit or turps.
