Hello,
Phoned up my local tax office....have overpaid in tax. They have told me to send my P60 is it?!?, to them when i get it this month, and they will be able to tell how much i have overpaid and send me a cheque out for that amount...my questions is
*how long it will take to get to me if i send it off straight away(going away in June(could really use the money then)
*Is their something i could do to speed it up
*Is their away to change my tax code(Well...the M1/W1 after if) which is why i have overpaid in tax in the first place, to a code where i am not overpaying in tax.
To date this year i have grossed £7,100 and paid £641.00 in tax so i reckon they only ow me £300, maybe a little more, but it would come in real handy. Also, i have paid £447.73 NIC...have i overpaid on that, it seems alot for such small earning, what do you think??

Are you still employed? If so, any tax refund would normally be included in your wages. Most tax refunds are automatic too - a cheque sent out in October or November from HMRC.
As for your tax code - it is set by HMRC according to your situation. Why do you think it is wrong?

Yes its wrong. It has an W1/M1 after it, i want this away, how can i do this. The tax year has ended so wouldnt they send me a cheque???0

Ring HMRC and ask what the W1/M1 means. The tax year has just ended but any refund could take a while to process. You could ask for a refund now but it might take a month or two to get to you.0

The M1/W1 should disappear once we go over into the new tax year (6 April 2007) as this will be a new year for your employer to operate. The M1W1 code could be because there is a gap in your employment record with the Revenue and so they don't know how much tax you had paid. With a M1/W1 code no refund would be given in your wages because there is doubt over the total tax paid during the year.
If you get your P60 soon take it down to your local enquiry centre or post it to your tax office and ask them to review the tax year to see if you have paid too much tax. It might be worth your while to complete the P91 (http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/pdfs/p91_bs5_02.pdf ) form confirming all periods of employment and unemployment during the year so they don't have to write out to you. It normally takes 4 - 6 weeks for a refund to be sent out. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
I had a cheque last year after chasing my tax that my company should never had done. Anway I was always chasing them and kept every bit of paperwork. Took about 9 weeks but I received the full amount I requested

Pam17 is right - the first wage that you receive into the new tax year should be on a cumlative basis - ie NOT M1/W1
Your company should provide your P60 before the end of May. Speak to the wages dept and ask them when they are likely to be issued.
