The general consensus is 'no'
Do a forum search for last minute or late deals for loads of recent threads all asking the same thing.
You may well find late availability; do not, however, expect some fabulous, ridiculously cheap, last-minute bargain.0 -

NO
Those days have long since gone.0 -
are there any travel agents left in airports? If you get cheap flights on the day, how are you going to book accommodation and transfers?0

Major TOs such as Thomson/First Choice all have 'late deals' sections on their websites for departures within the next six weeks which can be searched by a variety of parameters. Maybe start there to give you some ideas.0

Last minute packages are more likely to get you a good deal than flights. Flights alone are rarely cheap last minute.0

Airport taxes have ruined this. If the airline were to send you somewhere for a few quid they would lose out on the taxes.0

The reduced number of flights have stopped this. The hotels have availability, but the flights fill up quickly.
I just booked a 'late deal' 2 and a half weeks before the holiday.
I daren't leave it any longer as the seats on the flight would probably run out.
I've missed several shortlisted holidays as the flights filled up.
Canaries seem to be a problem right now, with both flights and sought-after hotels.
Went for a cheeky week in Kos instead. Looks like temps will still be 25-30 in early October.
If you aren't choosy, you will get somewhere. It won't be cheap though.
Muslim countries such as Turkey, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia (where it keeps kicking off) will have the best bargains. There are plenty of flights to Turkey.British Ex-pat in British Columbia!0 -
We booked a holiday to Cuba 6 days before we went on the Thomas Cook website. Brilliant holiday but for other reasons would never book with them again (bit of a fiasco with outbound flight!)What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0

My local airport (Bournemouth) has our local travel agent (Bath Travel)in residence. I am unsure if you can book and travel the same day though. If you don't ask, you don't get!0

Yes, the days of cheap last minute flights and holidays is long gone.
About 10 years ago I woke up early on Saturday morning, couldn't think of anything to do for the weekend so I went online, booked a cheap Ryanair flight to Santander (the Spanish city, not the bank), jumped in the car, drove to Stansted and a few hours later I was sat on the beach. I sorted out a cheap B&B when I got there, had a fun weekend and then flew back first thing on Monday morning. Total cost of flights and hotel was about £50.0
