Cost of a fuse box?

We are interested in a house, the only thing is I have noticed that it has what appears to be an old fuse box - it doesn't look modern. What would it cost (approximately) to have a new one installed?

I think really if you were to replace what looks like an old fuse box, you would need to be riwiring the house! This costs a couple of thousand at a guess.

If it is really just a new consumer unit you need, this would be less than a hundred plus circuit breakers for each circuit.

not always ... just £200ish for a new cu but if they look at the wires they can say "i'm not connecting that wire" if it looks unsafe.

best thing is to get some one out for a quote (its the only way to find out) get 3 people out and see which one is best not just the cheapest.

but whats wrong with a old fusebox we still have an old one its working fine.

Don't forget, if it need new rewiring, then you decorated walls will be damaged, meaning new redocration not to mention the floors.

don't worry, when OH bought his flat it needed a new fuse box but not rewiring. It was about £10 per fuse and he had 8/9. A larger house might have a few more.

Screwfix have a split load 12 way board with breakers (ten i think)for £50.

Not the best in the world but good enough.

Thanks for this everyone. Unfortunately I have never bought a house in the UK. In SA part of the sale had to include a wiring certificate, supplied by the seller, as well as a wood beetle certificate etc. So this is all very new to me! :o

We had our house rewired 2 years ago, and our main fuse box needed changing, our electrician gave us a phone number to use, presumably for national grid (or whoever they are now) they came and installed a new one within a couple of days, took about half an hour, and best of all, there was no charge for this, so I suppose it depends on if it's your main fuse box. Try your electricity company.

Am I the only one imagining a beetle coming to survey your house before you can sell it?!
