Primus' line rental, 1471, 1571 and caller display comes to 10.55/month, which is only 60p a year more than BT's 10.50 for the same - just without the hassle of BT being able to fleece you.
By opting for BT's lowest package (the Unlimited Weekend Plan - via which I make my weekend UK 01/02/03 calls so as to qualify for free Caller Display), you negate any 'fleecing' possibility (that's the whole purpose of my 'six steps' post).
BTW, on behalf of your friends and family, may I urge you to dump 1571 anyway.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -

It's certainly a possibility that Primus could block override providers, but there aren't any googleable reports of it and they've been going for 12 years or so. In the event that they do block 18185, the only noticable change here will be occasional daytime calls costing 3p/min instead of 5p/call.
By fleecing, I mean the extra £1.50/month attributed to the quarterly £4.50 payment processing fee. However, as it's a Sunday evening I'm yet to find out if the middlemen that I've been scoping out (Primus, YourCalls, MadAsAFish) do this too.
1571: my primary mode of contact is by mobile (text then call, or call straight away if urgent). 1571 on the home phone is largely for screening withheld callers, as cold-callers rarely leave messages. So not the drama.0
