How do I calculate cost of my journey?

Options
The journey is 129.39 km and according to my car's brochure it should be 100km = 6.0 litres for extra urban driving (dual carriageway/motorway). I pay £1.389 per litre petrol.

TIA

    6 x 1.2939 = 7.7634 litres used x £1.389 = £10.78

  • There's no point basing it on the official figure.....

If you do 130 km at 6 litres per 100 km then you need 7.8 litres

Which costs £ 1.389 per litre so the total is just under £ 11

Real world is probably nearer fifteen quid

A couple of times, we've filled the tank and then run it to virtually empty, and found we've got around 700 miles out of a tank (70l diesel tank). Tank costs around £99. 99/700 = £0.142 or 14.2p per mile.

Very, very rough figure as obviously how many miles you get out of a tank will depend on the driving you do on that tank. But our driving is always primarily motorway with a bit of town thrown in. I use 15p per mile as a rough figure when working out a budget for holidays, or for comparing car costs to public transport.

Worth resetting your trip mileometer when you fill up a couple of times and seeing how many miles a tank does you, for future reference.

You realise you are only considering fuel costs, there is a lot more to consider for " the cost of a journey" the HMRC give a not very generous 45p a mile up to 10000 miles.

    +1
Without knowing the car its impossible be accurate but take tyres, if your front tyres last 20k miles and cost £100 a pair, then your 80 mile journey will use 40p worth of rubber. Then theres other wear and tear, depreciation etc etc, it all adds up

The most economical small cars cost roughly 30p a mile according to what-car magazine
