Utility bills in new property

We are moving from shared accommodation into a 3 bedroom house on 1st October. How will the energy companies know what to charge us and when will we need to make our first payment?

The day you move in (or take possession of the property if it is not the move-in day), you need to take readings from your meters and advise each company that you are now responsible for the utilities used from that date. Any previous usage will be charged to the previous tenants/owners. If the water is not metered, contact the company and give them your details from that date.

Good idea to take dated photos of each meter, just as proof, and send a confirmation email to each company after you have phoned them. Don't forget to tell the Council tax too!
  • Okie dokes, so will they work out our new bills based on what the previous tenants used?

If you are looking to set up monthly direct debit payments, they will set you on a certain estimated level, then adjust it after a few months if need be.

Or possibly, like ours, let you set your monthly DD and then reassess it in the future if you're vastly underpaying (I would say 'or overpaying' but the cynic in me doubts it!). You may want to just leave it initially to be billed out while you shop around for the best deal though, we did this and they just send their regular bill in for your usage, we put readings in via the online account so the bills were pretty accurate.
