Incorrect claims of missed payments

I used to have an Egg credit card that I payed off in total last year in one large payment to get away from their overnight hike in interest to 29.9%. The following month there was an outstanding payment of £26 interest left over which I promptly paid and closed the account.

To my complete amazement, a recent check on my credit file shows 3 late payments for that account, April, May and June with them actually not closing down the account until July 2011, three months after I actually instructed them to.

I have used equifax to put this error right but equifax just repeated what the credit card company told them despite my equifax credit file showing a balance of £0 for the periods I have been charged!

I have tried writing to Egg direct but they say it's now Barclaycard I need to contact and Barclaycard say no it's Egg so in the meantime my excellent credit rating has a red mark against it and has been relegated to average.

How to I get these idiots to actually look at the facts and make the adjustment?

I think you will probably find you will have a small 'trailing interest' balance. This is interest on the previous balance which has accrued
from the statement being produced and you paying it.
Its what normally happens. Did you get statements on line, you have maybe deleted them thinking you had paid it off and so not opened them.

if you got them through the post, perhaps you have binned them thinking 'I paid it off so no need to open it.

You really need to speak to your CC company.

Can you get any relevant statements for after you paid this last payment or what you thought was your last payment.

Sadly yes, I stupidly thought I had finished with Egg and deleted/threw away all correspondence.

I have however managed to locate my bank statements for that period and it clearly shows the regular direct debit payment of £200 for April and May (which would easily cover the payments) and then a final large payment to clear the account in June. I spoke to an Egg advisor at the time and he mentioned a small interest to check later which I did and made a final payment of £26. Until now, I had not even thought about it until I did a credit check recently and discovered this error.

If I have bank statements to prove on time payments (it was direct debit controlled by them) surely they can't still claim missed repayments.

I must say Equifax are very disappointing and do not seem very interested in my case at all.

looks like trailing interest from the trailing interest.. Did you cancel the direct debit after the last payment you made??

Yes, however I did get a final statement that proved that all was payed the following month. To the best of my knowledge all was settled for the full amount to the last penny.

Bank statements dont mean a thing.

I think you will need at least a couple of your CC statements after you paid your £26. There will have been probably 2 with a couple of pounds on one and a smaller amount on the next one. It seems the only explanation. Its an easy thing to do if your not aware of the trailing interest trap.

If the DD was controlled by them, then if you cancelled the DD they wouldnt be able to claim it.

Did yu move house around that time.
I would speak to them and ask where these late payments have come from.

No change of address and DD only cancelled after final payment was made.

Sadly, Egg no longer exist and there is nobody to contact with regard to these errors.

My bank statements clearly show DD payments to Egg and the two final payments I made to settle the account.

Equifax were as much use as a chocolate teapot when I called them so I am going to try Experian instead.

If you find the same information on your Experian report you can ask us to take it up with them for you. You can also add a note to your credit report, just as an interim measure hopefully, explaining what happened.
