Hi there,
myself and hubby privately rent. He is 62 and working full time.Does anyone know what (if any) benefit you get after retirement towards housing costs.
I am really worried. At present we pay £775 pcm. We have some savings (under £20,000) but he will have to retire at 65 and will only have a basic state pension.
I am 54 and will continue to work, probably bringing about £1000 pcm in. until my retirement.
We have tried to find out thro DWP website but no luck.
Has anyone got advice,
Thanks

Go to entilted2 .com
They have a benefits calculator. You could be entitled to Pension Credits, which would then entitle you to housing Ben and Council Tax Ben.0 -

If you do have to claim LHA/HB in the future it will only be based on the local rate for a 1 bed flat. Depending on what you rent now, this may be worth bearing in mind.0

if you have more than £16k in savings then you will get no means tested benefits and i suspect that with your £1000 pcm plus his approx £430 a month you maybe over the limits anyway0 -

Apparently that doesn't apply to people over retirement age, however it's something to check out as I don't know whether it's the older or younger of a couple who 'count' or whether both have to be over retirement age. I also don't know what would count as retirement age for this purpose.
We had an info update on this at CAB a couple of weeks ago and it seems that when Universal Credit comes in next year, where a couple have one person under state pension age, they cannot claim Pension Credit and will claim Universal Credit.
Two important differences will be that they will be subject to the size limitations in housing and secondly, the person under pension age will be expected to be looking for work.
I don't think this will apply to those already claiming Pension Credit and those on Pension Credit will not be subject to housing size restrictions.0
