Wrongdoings of a travel insurance company! Please can I have some advice?

Hi everyone,

I have a situation I'd like to share with you all! A few weeks ago I had my car broken into in Blackpool while on a weekend away, we were coming home and stopped off for some dinner on the way, subsequently we had all our things in the car, we came back to the car to discover the boot lock damaged and a bag missing which had all our electronic equipment in, iPad, laptop, camera etc. I reported the incident to the local police right away. Anyway, these are minor details.
In short I am not covered on my car or home insurance. However, I have travel insurance with my current account (I won't mention a name-not sure if I'm allowed?) for which I met all parameters for a holiday incident. So I thought I'd try claim on this policy.
I phoned and went through all the usual questions and details only to be told that they don't cover this type of theft. Great!! They said that only non-valuable items were covered, items like toiletries and sundries. To which I thought, strange? So I got my detective head on and phoned up again, posing as a potential customer, they clarified that these items in this exact scenario ARE in fact covered! So by now I'm thinking what do I do now??
I followed this up by confronting them about it, to keep this brief, they accepted their 'mistake' having checked the call recording! They offered my £50 compensation which I refused and escalated a complaint for what I deem as blatantly being dishonest about what is covered in order to gain business!
So, what I'm asking everyone is, have I any chance of the insurance company possibly honouring my claim? Has anyone else had any similar experiences? I am awaiting a response from the company in question and am just wondering what to expect?
Thanks to everyone in advance!

What does your policy say about covering or not covering valuables?

Hi thanks for the response! It doesn't say anything, it doesn't stipulate a type of item at all. It's rather wooly! Theres nothing outlined in exclusions or anything like that. Can I assume from this that they are covered?

There must be something to say what is covered - exclusions can help but not enough on their own.

Maybe time to name them so someone can look up the wording, or provide a link to their wording on their website.
  • Sounds fairly common.

Take the £50, or if you have them acknowledging the mis-selling in writing, take it to one of the newspapers' consumer rights people. They'll get you £100.

I'm surprised there's NO cover on your car insurance; is it TPFT?

There will be a policy wording but it might only be available online. You need to specify which bank it is and which policy (some have different cover depending on the type of account you have).

Why isn't there any cover on your household policy? Do you only have contents insurance with no personal possessions extension?

    I'm also thinking this.

My insurance paid out a few years ago when not only was a 3 month old car written off, but an £80,000 video camera and £2,800 laptop was written off in the boot of it at the same time (I got rear ended at a set of lights).

This is obviously at the extreme end of things, but that was a basic FC policy with HSBC Premier, including business usage.

Car insurance would have a limit of maybe £100 for personal effects. Maybe £250 on a fleet policy. Probably your property policy paid - not your motor insurance.
  • If rear ended the TPI would have paid for the items in the boot but that is under the third party liabilities section which is totally separate to the personal effects part

Good point. Probably TPI insurers would have paid CK so nothing at all to do with his 'basic FC policy'.

I've just re-checked. My car has Public Liability on it (a similar insurance to taxis), which was why it paid out.

    I didn't know that :o
