Shouldn't you have been able to get either Jobseeker's Allowance or Incapacity Benefit during this time?

    Big Aunty

Many thanks for taking the time to explain matters so carefully for which I am most grateful. Because all I have ever claimed is DLA I guess I am a little naive. But I am determined to make sure I keep my nose clean.

I was self employed and being naive didn't realise, when it came to it, I hadn't been paying the right type of NI stamps so not able to claim anything. So I made a spreadsheet on Excel and took into account my savings, added when my private pension started, my wifes state pension kicked in and from the outset felt I could get through to my state pension without needed to claim means tested benefits.

Where it went wrong was having to pay to get things done I used to do like gardening, decorating repairs, having to move (in rented & our supposed long term let came to an abrupt end as the landlord split from his wife and needed the money from selling our place) and even adding in the DLA I found that my financial life didn't quite stick to the spreadsheet.
