Modern antifreeze only needs changing every 10 years.

The cooling system should ever need topping up unless its leaking.

If thats the case you need to sort that.

That is not true. As I said, the red stuff lasts for five years and the blue stuff two years. A 1999 Fiesta will undoubtedly have Ethylene Glycol which should be replaced every two years if you go 'by the book'. There is no general antifreze that is good for 10 years that I know of.

easy to see if car had used water because you could show punters how to check it by line of site rather than dipping a trotter in

Depending on what car it is, you may not be able to use normal Antifreeze...

???? like a VW beetle, perhaps?
  • Don't use the really cheap stuff. It corrodes the aluminium components of your waterways and causes more problems in the long run.

The halfords 5 year stuff is pretty good. Much cheaper with a trade card too.

Just to clarify...is this to go:

    in your radiator/engine = Antifreeze
    Or
in your windscreen wiper washer bottle = Screenwash

you're confusing coolant with antifreeze. Antifreeze is in every liquid in the car, it stops them freezing at normal freezing temps.

coolants and screenwashes are premixed formulas that contain antifreeze, distilled water (and shampoo in the case of screenwash).

OP stick to manufacturers recommended coolant, don't cheap out and go for generic ones. There's a risk of wrong coolants eating away at the hoses and creating leaks. Always stick to manufactuers coolants, dont even go for "manufacturers spec" third party coolants
  • I get the good stuff from GSF. As cheap as anywhere
