odds-n-sods.....thank you. I have a lovely nestle recipe book which US friends sent me. I bought the cup measuring set, and tried a lot of the recipes- but some ingredients didn't translate well....so I may well pick your brain ! :-)0 -

odds-n-sods, packed brown sugar - is that soft brown? and all purpose flour, is that plain? (please !!)0

Brown sugar in North America has a higher water content; it can be packed into the container; UK brown sugar doesn't do that. Just measure as you normally would with light/soft brown sugar + add 1tbsp.
all-purpose = plain flour (american recipes rarely use self-raising)
granulated sugar = caster sugar
confectioners' sugar = icing sugar
Crisco = butter/lard/marg.0
