Does your Uni have a creche for the children of students? Can other posters give an idea of their likely child care award if the mother returns to work?

The childcare award (at the moment) doens't account for hours.

Eg if you worked 24 hours a week you can claim full time childcare. Based on your income and hers it will be most likely at the 70% - Ie you will have to find 30% yourself.
  • thanks for your help everyone, may have to just go and quit and go back in to work
  • I would echo that you should be receiving Adult dependant grant, parental learning grant, child benefit and child tax credit, then if you can find a part time job (or your partner) you can claim working tax credit too. No need to quit.
Real men never follow instructions; after all they are just the manufacturer's opinion on how to put something together. :p
  • My partner and I are both HE students, so as other have said make sure you get Parents Learning Allowance and Adult Dependent Grant from SFE.

You will get full Housing Benefit, be exempt from paying Council Tax, and during the summer if not working can claim JSA to get you through to the new uni year.

Student load is taken as income, grant is not. It won't make much difference as your loan income is no where near the threshold for reduced housing benefit.

Also, as summer comes next year check your uni for hardship grants, ours gave us £500 which helped through the summer.

Why is this relevant?. The OP states that his partner is unemployed, so there is no reason (currently) why she couldn't look after the sprog.

Of course she could indeed get offered a job 'tomorrow' but in this economic situation pigs often cruise at 40,000 feet

  • I would go to your college/uni student funding department who can advise you accurately on what you are entitled to and can help with your claims. Then you will know where you stand and can make a decision on whether to continue your course.
