Non KC registered pups

I don't want to start a debate on the rights and wrongs of the KC - as I am aware of their short-comings - but if pups (Dalmatians) are advertised for approx £500 as non KC registered - the mother isn't either - is it worth the risk, knowing the problems Dalmatians can have?

I would say possibly no. I don't show my dogs, don't have any interest in showing my dogs, but one thing that KC registration can indicate is that the dog breeder has an interest in showing dogs - and this is beneficial to you because it means they breed to the breed standard (because otherwise, why bother showing the dog) and this can help keep the dog in optimum health. For the most part, anyway, many would argue that the standard for breeds like Pugs etc. are to the detriment of the breeds, but for the most part, breeding to standard can help prevent dogs being bred simply for their usual colour or whatever - if they have to meet x, y and z shape physically, have a certain temperament, be handlable by the judges and so on, it can help contribute to healthier, more sound pups.
Secondly, the KC offer testing schemes (and believe they require some for KC registration) which can help ensure you pick a breeder that does the health tests and only breeds from appropriate parents.
KC registration would not be the ultimate deciding factor because you will get bad KC accredited breeders, and good non-KC accredited breeders, but the lack of papers would have me looking into the breeder even more closely.
Also the price - I have no idea how much Dalmatian puppies sell for but if they are implying the non-registration gets you a bargain, I would be wary. KC registration has a very low cost if I remember rightly so I would be wondering what else they've skimped on to offer such a low price (because a reputable breeder will charge more to cover not only the cost of raising the litter to higher standards and healthtests on the parents, but also the cost of sourcing good breeding 'stock', cost of showing the dogs to ensure they are to breed standard, travel expenses for finding a good stud and so on).

Selling a pure-bred as non KC reg can also be an alert to a puppy farm/BYB. The KC will only register I think the first three litters from a dog, if someone is selling as non-KC reg it could be because they have already had more than three litters, no decent breeder would ever breed a dog that many times and would be in it purely for money.0

Trying not to bring the whole KC issue up but for me ( having more experience of KC than most shall we say..... ) I would ask myself am I willing to pay the asking price. Once I have seen the mum and the litter and asked the questions etc I would make my decision based on that. Just becauae a dog is KC registered it doenst mean the animal you go to see is the same animal... doenst mean she hasnt had lots of litters very close together either....0

I would always want KC papers if buying a pedigree pup if I am honest but would NOT rely on KC papers alone if you get what I mean ?
KC papers to me are good for tracing the generations and making sure that the ancestors have all been health checked, aren't too closely related etc. I don't know a lot about Dalmations but for my pups breed ( German Shepherd) it is the hips and elbows that should be tested so I made sure the parents had that also.0 -
The kennel club register pups from puppy farms so don't think because a litter is kc registered that it comes from a good breeder, there are loads of good breeders kc registered but I just want to make you aware that there are also bad ones. I usually tell people to go to the breed club if they're looking for a pup, the clubs are usually very good at weeding out the bad breeders.0

Have the pups had hearing tests? I believe this is the main problem with Dalmations and if I bought one I would want it to be tested. I don't think they have to be pedigree to have a hearing test but they would need to have a microchip. I bought a dalmation pup for someone a few months ago, She was £550 had hearing test and microchip and kc reg0

What I was trying to say basically is that although KC goes for nothing in the way of a dogs health, most good breeders do use them (amongst the terrible breeders who do also, farms etc)
Kinski's advice re the breed clubs is very good, I got my pup from the chairperson of the German Shepherd dog club of Scotland, you can find the breed clubs for Dalmations on the KC website and it is a good place to begin.
When I said I would not get a dog without papers btw, I meant a pup, I have had rescues without papers.0 -
if they are saying that its kc but no papers then personally i would walk away its cost around 12 pound per pup to be registered
reason for not registering could 1 or several of the following
One or both parents of your puppy are not registered with the Kennel Club
The mother has had more than 6 litters`( i actually think it 4 now )
The mother was below 12 months at the time of mating ( this might be 2 years of old now )
The mother was above 8 years old and permission was not granted by the KC to register the litter
One or both parents of your puppies have breeding endorsements on their own pedigrees which means their offspring are not eligible for KC registration. (Responsible breeders will sometimes lift these restrictions providing the new owner has met a specified criteria in terms of breed standard conformation and / or acceptable health test results). This means, in simple terms, it is likely the breeder of your pups has not met this criteria, and therefore, you should WALK AWAY.
this has the proper info on why a kc pup would not be registered
