Deposit return question

Hi everyone, quick question!

Is it reasonable for our thankfully ex landlord to demand final utility bills/ council tax bills before refunding our deposit? We have closed all the accounts but have not received any paperwork yet, what has it got to with him anyway seeing as the bills are in our names?

No, there is no need to prove anything to the LL.

Is your deposit protected? If so, apply to the scheme to have it released to you.

The deposit has been protected, can I just quickly ask if you have to leave it a certain number of days before applying for your deposit from DPS?

As soon as the tenancy ends, you can apply. If LL wants to make any deductions, they can contest the deposit return, and the scheme will ask him for proof of the deductions requested. He cannot withhold anything for utilities whether you prove the end bills have been paid yet or not, as the debt is not his, its yours!

Can I just ask, when you said I should request our deposit back through the TDS, did you mean fill in the dispute form? I can't seem to find anywhere on the site to put in a request for the deposit to be returned without opening a dispute?

  • sorry to bump this up again but I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a way to request our deposit back on the TDS website or if its a case of raising a dispute?

Ring the TDS and ask them.
