First Time Buyer: Am I out of my depth?

  • Commute to Chatham and buy a house.

That is really attractive. I just live in Dartford and hate the commute as much as it is.

If you're spending £100k, can I advise maybe doing a little research first? I don't mean it rudely - but maybe hang about on this forum (particularly this section) for a while - you could save yourselves tens of thousands of pounds now and in the future (e.g. when you try to resell your "£115k" flat that was never really worth that much)

Thank you. I appreciate your wisdom. I will definitely hold back while I do my research.

Better disappointment now than tears later.

It is on a faster line and only a couple of minutes more travel time. But if you would rather a flat with leasehold problems over a freehold house with garden, then that is your choice.
    Been away for a while.
  • Chatham is an awful area.

    Every bit of it?
It is nice to see the value of your house going up'' Why ?
Unless you are planning to sell up and not live anywhere, I can;t see the advantage.
If you are planning to upsize the new house will cost more.
If you are planning to downsize your new house will cost more than it should
If you are trying to buy your first house its almost impossible.

Please let me know what you guys think.
    (Sorry, I can't post links)

That is an ex local authority flat in one of the most horrible and undesirable areas of London, hence why it's so cheap. Can't you wait a little while and save a bit more to buy something a little bit better? That sort of place is very depressing and just not worth buying.
