Seller thinks I'm trying to pull a fast one!

I know eBay will err on my side but I just feel bad for the guy!

I just bought a high value laptop from him for £800 - I think he's doing a business clear out of this particular model.

But when I got it out of the box, charged it up and turned it on, nothing happened. Well it seems to be on but the screen stays black, nothing address on it at all.

I emailed the seller and of course he has immediately lept on the defensive - he says that he personally checked it before it went, that he's sold hundreds of them without complaint and that he doesn't believe it could possibly have broken.

I have promised to spend today trying to work out what's wrong but I've pretty given up now and will have to send it back. Hopefully then he can see the fault for himself!

  • Raise a SNAD and send back Royal Mail Special Delivery or an equivalent trackable/signed for service.
Personally I would not even try to mess about with it, get your £800 back in your pocket.
Others on the forum may want to add some more details.
  • Make sure you pay and insure it properly by special delivery.

If you cannot prove with an online signature you may lose an ebay/paypal case.

Double check the screen is on - it may have been set to monitor.

Unlikely - but worth a try. Mines in monitor mode all the time - as i use it as a desktop.

Why do you feel sorry for him if he has sold you a faulty product?

Quite right, if I had spent £800 on a faulty item, pity is something I would not be feeling for the seller!

I thought it could be something like that... I downloaded the manual from the manufacturer website and it said to push Fn+F3 to switch displays. No joy :(

I'd rather have this one working - I'm moving to Australia next week and the plan was to have a working computer when i arrive (I work freelance). So I may not have time for an exchange.

And yeah I do feel bad for him because I genuinely believe he sent me a good product. Sadly sometimes things just go wrong in transit.

  • I was in Australia earlier this year, and certainly at the time, computers were cheaper there than they are here. Also, if you get one over there, you won't have to mess with the adaptor for the plug sockets.

So if you don't get it sorted before you go, there is at least a silver lining :D

  • You could perhaps offer for the seller to call you and try and talk you through some fixes. Just in case it is something silly like it being in monitor mode or something.
At least then you've tried everything to avoid having to return it.
"So long and thanks for all the fish" :hello:
  • i was going to suggest calling the seller and asking them what they did when they checked it...in case you are doing something wrong. Ask them to talk you through it. if it still doesn't work then see what he offers as a solution and if you are not happy then open SNAD case and as everyone said make sure if you send it back that it is trackable and insured to £88
