Bankruptcy Fee

Hello all,

Had my beautiful daughter in Nov 2010, Moved house in Dec 2011. Was made redundant in March 2012 and split from my partner in May 2012.

Following a indepth appointment with the CAB yesterday, it appears that Bankruptcy looms. (I owe too much for a DRO). I have no assets (don't own a home and borrowing a car).

I have very little option but to cup in hand to my parents to ask for the £525 fees. Is there any grants or benevolency funds or loans available to me that i can try first, to contribute towards these costs?

thanks peeps.

Hi phantomraspberry and welcome to the BR board. Sorry I'm repeating the same reply as Lizzy's but hope this helps.

There are a number of charities that may help with bankruptcy costs and fees depending on eligibility. You will usually need the assistance of a recognised Debt charity in completing applications and be patient can take a while to process too.

  • That is Super Dooper helpful thank you. I've emailed UNISON as i was a paying member when working to see if they can help at all. found their criteria and it seems i may qualify for a grant towards. fingers crossed.

  • I'm wondering whether UNISON may be able to help with the heating oil too. although i hate being a scrounger, i just have no way of finding the £500 odd to fill up the oil tank and it'll be winter before i know it. All the oil companies take payment on delivery. If i'm going through Bankruptcy i'm not going to get any credit = no heating.

This is a very scary and stressful time, but i've gotta let go of my pride and see if i'm entitled to anything i suppose.
  • Good luck to you both, your pride is one thing you will not need to let go of, it is a proud and brave thing to do to deal with the issues you have, failure is falling down and not getting back up, you are getting back up there! :):)

If you are claiming job seekers might be worth talking to them reference a crisis loan or similar for your heating oil, or can you heat your house an alternative way?

    Best wishes..
every time I manage to get one more breath into this body, I will sing a song of thanks to you my brothers, my sisters, my friends, may your sleep be peaceful, and angels sing sweetly in your ears.
  • UNISON can't help as i stopped being a member when i was made redundant. BUM. I can't see any grants on the Turn2Us website that apply to me. so have had to ask my parents for the fee.
If i take a crisis loan am i right in thinking that my income support payments will be reduced to cover the loan? I don't think i could cope with any less income right now.
We have a wood burner in the living room (it's an old cottage) but i'd need to get some wood and learn how to light it and keep it going.
Does anyone have any other ideas. I hate being a scrounge but i'm gonna need fuel and soon, and i'm all outta inspiration....
  • yes thats right, they decide how much a deduct it automatically from your benefit

  • Thanks to this super forum i've found out that i was advised incorrectly by the CAB and actually qualify for a DRO as my student loan isn't counted. so i'll be going down that route.

I'm scared about reducing my income, so still undecided about how to pay for the fuel but.... onwards and upwards...
